The Jeanjean story began in the small village of Saint-Felix-de-Lodez in the Hérault, to the north west of Montpellier, in the foothills of the Larzac plateau and the Cévennes hills. Ever since land registry records have been kept here, the Jeanjean family have been known as winegrowers. At first, the family grew vines and even ran an auberge, but it was the wine merchant side of the business that developed progressively. However, even though their business activities have grown, the family remain vignerons at heart: vinegrowing is part of the Jeanjean DNA.
In the 1870s Maurice-Vincent Jeanjean, known as the “Barricailleur” or barrel man, wrote the first page of this wonderful family story. He bought wine from fellow wine makers in the Languedoc and had it delivered to clients in central France. As his father, Etienne-Maurice, had done, he also bought a few additional parcels of vines for himself. Today, 5 generations later, the Jeanjean family is still investing in the production and sale of quality wines.
A century later, having overcome the crises of phylloxera, wars and production gluts, the Jeanjean family is still just as passionate about their region and still on a quest for quality: the only way forward for wines from the south of France. Under the guidance of Hugues and Bernard Jeanjean, they moved their production away from bulk volumes towards new types of packaging, diversified the origins of their vines, modernised their wineries and successfully steered the company through the fast-changing environment of French and international markets.
From 1994, with the flotation of the company on the unlisted securities market and the acquisition of OGIER in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, JEANJEAN began a period of external growth which contributed to the development of other family wine producers in the south of France: RIGAL, GASSIER, CAZES, ANTOINE MOUEIX.
